A couple more annoying questions?

Hey, I ask WAY too many questions - so Im thankful you guys are so full of knowledge and a sense of humor!

1. Best substrate to prevent odor?

2. One of my hens (all are from same hatching) is laying by the clock - every day around 2pm. But none of my other ladies will give me their eggs! What's up? My laying lady has been doing this for 3 days, is there a time frame I should wait before deciding to give extra light? Right now they are getting roughly 12 hours of light (6:30am - 6:30pm)

As for odor, pine shavings, DE, or either with barn lime added* if birds cant get to it... think in the poop tray.

I would only increase light time if I want my girls to lay eggs....I would start with 14-15 hrs. It seems logical to me that the longer you can hold them off laying, the bigger your girls could grow. (A Buttercup theory) It has to reduce growth to produce all those eggs. They can only eat so much so Im thinkin once the laying starts, the growth slows down. But, you know what they say about opinions....Bill

Pine pellets work better on odor, the shavings tend to get a sour smell if they get damp...trust me, they'll get damp

If you want them to lay daily you need to make sure they have plenty of light and a good quality, high protein, feed.

Let them get another week or 2 older. then if not layiong give them more light..
