Just adopted 6 chicks thursday. New babies are doing well. Coop is done, just waiting for the weather to paint. These are our first chick. Any helpful hints welcome.

My husband built a coop 3x5 approx. I picked out 2 Australops, 2 rhode island reds, 2 barred rocks. I thought this would be the most I could have with coop size. The seminar I went to said to place the chicks on paper rather than wood chips right away so they would not eat them. When do I feed them additional food other then chick feed?
Thanks

After they are one to two weeks old, you can start giving them some treats, but you will need to provide them with "chick grit" so they can digest it. Forage cakes for chicks are a good distraction in the brooder, and mine love a bit of yogurt (toss some chick crumbles in there to get them interested), and also MEALWORMS - food of the Gods as far as chicks are concerned.
