I ordered my incubator last night, and my husband is going to get me some mutt fertile chicken eggs for a practice run with it.
If they hatch i'll raise them till they are small fryers.
In the mean time I've seen a few things on line I have questions about as far as the quails go.
Do you need the gel for the newly hatched quails?
Do you debeak them?
Can you use shreaded newspaper in their brooder?
Where is the best place to get some coturnix hatching eggs?
I only need a small order of eggs to get new blood into my layers.
We are going have some 40 degree nights, is that to cold to put 3 week olds out side in a unheated shed?
What can I feed besides game feed and boiled eggs?
The person I got these from only fed comercial feed. For the meat ones I guess thats ok, but for the ones you keep longer for eggs I would like to give them treats of some sort.

Do you need the gel for the newly hatched quails? No, simple gamebird starter works fine.
Do you debeak them? No, never debeak birds.
Can you use shreaded newspaper in their brooder? Yes. You can also use pine shavings, sand, other small animal bedding, grass hay and even raise them on wire.
Where is the best place to get some coturnix hatching eggs? James Marie Farms (search here in BYC in the search bar) sells quality hatching eggs. You can also check the Breeders Directory in the archives at the top of the quail forum page.

We are going have some 40 degree nights, is that to cold to put 3 week olds out side in a unheated shed? Yes. Quail babies need added heat until they are 5 to 6 weeks old. Their bodies have not yet learned to adjust the internal thermostat at 3 weeks old.
What can I feed besides game feed and boiled eggs? Only after they are 6 weeks old, you can add greens, veggies, quartered fruit, mealworms, etc...

Oh, and welcome to BYC and the quail forums! Good luck with your new quail adventures!
