The other day I found an odd soft shelled egg made of two together.. and found her on the nest, thinking she was broody I picked her up. She’s a mess, I thought she had broke an egg being on the nest. Well I saw this... another soft shelled egg and what looks like a prolapse. I softly tugged the rest of the egg out, and she walked to get some water.

What’s happening to my girl? This is the first sign of her not feeling well, comb has been nice and healthy (this morning the back corner of her comb is sagging a little bit, but still bright red)

She’s a French black copper maran, if it matters, and she’ll be 2 years old in June.

I do want to add she has been laying large beautiful legs up until now. The rest of the flock are laying normal eggs, with the exception of my wellsummer consistently laying fairy/fart eggs. The feed store has stopped putting oyster shell in their crumble, due to a shortage, but say there is a other form of calcium in the feed in the form of powder.

She went back on the nest, and snapped a photo.

I would try to remove the egg membrane sticking out of her vent if you haven’t done so. It may help to give her a human calcium and vitamin d tablet for several days to see if it helps. Try to lubricate the prolapse tissue with honey or a mild oil, and push it back inside (once the membrane is out.) Keep her separated so that her vent is not pecked. If none of your hens is having problems with soft eggs, and they are eating layer feed, she may be having a problems with her oviduct shell gland. Some respiratory diseases can cause egg shell problems, and reproductive infection and disorders can do that as well. I have also seen a few fart eggs from my hens. Here is a good article with info on prolapses:

Thank you so much for responding! I will go get those supplements for her. I was able to gently remove it from her vent, and she hopped back onto the nest. No more eggs came out, but her prolapse has gone back in for now. I’m praying it stays put keeping my eye on her
