would I have to seperate a hen and her chicks from the rest of the flock.I have 20 shaver reds and 1 roo.if so how long or what age can they be with the rest of flock?thanks in advance!

Some people say yes, some say no. My experience,..I seperated mine. The other hens tryed to peck the babies to death. I kept my hen with her babies till they were about 4 weeks old, then I put her back in general population and the babies are still seperated. They will have to get some age and size on them before I would put them in with the others. Good luck!

We always isolate the hen and the chicks she has hatched.

We use a large "rabit hutch" in the barn so the hen and the babies can see the other chickens and visa versa.

We keep them in there for about 3 to 4 weeks. By then they are fairly well feathered out and can run hard.

The hen then takes her chicks outside and teaches them how to be a chicken.

We have a few silkies that have done this process several times and her babies are all grown up.
