I'm moving to a new house and am of course taking my chicks along. However, my current coop is too big to move, so I'll have to build another. This has been a little stressful, but I found a carpenter who will do it. I just need to get the materials.

And then...

I realized a friend recently bought a house to scrape and rebuild a new one on the property. It is being demolished this week, and I can go over and take whatever I want to use for my new coop.

So, what should I remember to get? I'm headed over there with a drill and a screwdriver, and planning on taking some hardware and maybe a couple of doors if they are solid. Hopefully I can get a window as well.

Can you think of any parts of a house (it does have fixtures but doesn't have appliances) that I might want to be sure to take? What might be useful in building a new coop?

The house was built in 1950. I can't remove exterior siding because of asbestos, but the rest is free game.

Would love any tips or ideas!

Check under the shingles. It might be 1'X6's or even 1'X8's of good hard wood you can use for floors or walls. An old house that was for demo near us had both of those in nice long 12 to 16 foot lenth's. Worth checking out. Or if it has a metal roof, see what you can reuse.

Light fixtures, if you plan to have electricity.
an old sink could be used as a feed trough.
Wiring, you can hang feeders or roost with it or wire your light fixture.
Solid doors can be cut to build just about anything. Make sure their solid not hollow core.
Old linoleum to line the coop floor, easier to clean.
check under the house & in the attic for old metal pans or pails. Food dishes or buckets to haul food & water with. Also look in the attic for closets with bare walls on one side. Free 2 x 4s.
Just a few things you might use.

I agree. Definitely look for old linoleum or something similar to put over the coop floor.
