Hello all, I am excited to join this group of experts as we expand our flock!
We started out last spring with 10 cornish X for eating, 5 white leghorns, and 1 RIR. Over the summer all white leghorns were taken (from an enclosed run) one by one during the day (killed in place and partially consumed!)...we then replaced them with brown leghorns and, another 10 cornish cross (which we butchered).
The flock is now a healthy 6 birds and we ordered several more from the feed store to arrive April 2. I have ordered one each of several varieties of brown layers, all pullets but judging from last year, one in 5 pullets ended up cockerals.
I am thinking of getting an incubator and getting some maran eggs, as these are not available at the feed store and to get them from a hatchery I'd have to order another 25 birds!
We'll be butchering 10 cornish X's with this order in mid May; I ordered the book on how to build the whiz bang plucker, as this is the most time consuming part of the whole process!
BTW, we're having roast chicken tonight.
I chose the username Chicken Paradise, because that's what the neighbor called our set-up after we built it (coop and dual chicken yards).
We are adding an addition to the back of the coop that will be another 10X10 space separated by a screen door for the young 'uns until they are old enough to mix with the rest; also will be a nice brooding spot later if needed.
BTW, my avatar is our last white leghorn "fuzzles" modeling the stylish Barbie glasses.
