I've found a new love for my chickens. And it's not just because one finally started to lay (still waiting on the other). As I was taking down my baby's jumper outside to put her in while I gardened, I dusted it off and shook it around to scare away any bugs or spiders that may have started hiding in it. Well a very large spider jumped out while I was doing this and within seconds was gobbled up by one of the chickens as soon as she spotted it. LOVE how good they are at pest control.

Then, as I was vacuuming inside, I found a very large cricket. I caught it in a cup, called to my son, and headed outside. I called the girls over and told my son to guess who would get to it first. He guessed correctly and was ecstatic to watch them go crazy over it (is that cruel??). Pest control AND entertainment.

How do your chickens entertain you? What's your favorite part of having chickens besides the eggs/meat?

My hens love worms. I keep a log in their run so that they can jump on it. I move it every now and then and they lunge after the worms. I have seen my hens grab worms and sprint away with all the others chasing them trying to get the worm out of her mouth. It's hilarious. :)

I do that with bricks! We had to add chicken wireon the bottom of the coop to keep the rats/mice from digging under and stealing their food so I weighed the wire down with bricks to get it to sit flush with the ground so I could add dirt/sand. Well I went to go clean out the coop the other day and lifted the bricks out and the chickens RAN into the coop to search for bugs underneath. Great finds!
