Hi, I'm new here. This is the first forum I've ever posted to so my lack of computer skills might show now and then! I have raised chickens of all kinds for most of my adult life and can't imagine living without them. My assorted flock now consists of Aracaunas, Buff Orpingtons, one lone Silkie, Old English, Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds and a new shipment of 45 bantams to arrive next week (five each of Blue Mille Fleur d Uccle, Japanese Black Tail Buff, Japanese Gray, Old English Black Breasted Red, Old English Crele, Old English Mille Fleur, Quail Belgian d'Anver, Silver Sebright and Buff Laced Seabrights). I am able to identify most of the popular breeds and my favorite of the old standards are definitely the Buff Orpingtons. We have also taken the plunge into quail raising, also for fun, and will begin raising some of the more rare types including the California Valley quail and the Texas Blue Scale quail. Our last chick flew the nest a few weeks ago to head off to college so we are learning the ins and outs of raising quail. We live on a farm with beef cattle (my husband's venture), two dogs, one rabbit, all the "girls" (the chickens) and four Jersey dairy cows (my venture). I am an avid cow milker and make butter, sour cream, etc. We have a big garden and I do a lot of canning. Originally from Kentucky, with both sides still living there, a lot of the skills I learned came directly from my hard working grandmothers. Well, that about sums it all up and was definitely too long but you asked for an introduction.........HA HA
