and 3 yrs old, we have 15 chicks, 2 cats, 2 goats and soon
to have 8 keets and a SA Boerboel puppy! I am a stay at
home Mama - Wife I love to garden and hang out with my
new animals!!

Thanks for a wonderful site - we need this...so how do I tell my the sex of my chickens and has any one raised older chickens with younger keets? They will be 11 weeks apart. Those are the questions that I have - so let's see what I can find.
~Peace~ and Thank you~

Howdy and welcome to the group my neighbor to the south!
Sexing your chicks will be pretty easy before long. The boys will get bigger combs and they'll be brighter colored than the girls. The girls don't get color in their combs until they start laying.

well - for sure one of my whites is a rooster - big red comb
( and he was the smallest of them all and the last to grow tail feathers) - but my others - different breeds are getting redder but not like the one ...what about behavior? Do hens fly around and do stand offs? I know they need to figure out their pecking order as well as the roosters figuring out which is top roo - right? Chickens are so much fun to watch!

~Thanks

Your barred Rock and Buff Orp roos will also be very easy to tell if you do have any roos. They get BIG wattles on their neck and big combs. Behavior doesn't really come into too much. I've had some roos that were really sweet and many hens that were skittish. Right now I've got some girls that feel like they need to be riding around on some part of my body all the time or they're being horribly abused. If you're seeing comb changes you should start hearing those little teenage crow attempts. It's so cute when they start to crow and their voice cracks.
