Hello BYC members,
I need some help..
So just a few weeks ago my beautiful Rhode island red roaster was put down from being sick, and as much as I enjoyed him I need a roaster in the coop.
So I had a friend that said she had 3 roasters she wanted to give away, because to many in her flock.
So I decide to take one, he is a White leghorn 6 month old. when I was there she pointed him out as being the big one of the roasters, and is the most dominant. I decide to bring him home, and when I did I put him in the outside pen. As soon as I did my 3 bigger hens were just walking around the pen and staring at him. I also have 3 young chicks only 3 months old that are still not in the same coop with the bigger hens, but were outside scared. I have been trying to let the chicks and the older hens to slowly get adapted, before putting all in one coop. When it was time to put them all in at night I put the roaster in with my older hens, and with the younger chicks together. It was a few pecks from my hens at the roasters and they were trying to keep him out of the coop, until out of no were he jumped on one and started mating one by one. My young chicks were scared, and were trying to hide in a corner. I was so worried about the younger chicks so I walked in the coop 20 minutes later, and as soon as I did they all ran to me crying. I couldn't stand to see them that way so I picked them up and put them back with my Ducks, and Turkeys. My ducks, turkeys, and chicks were all raised together, so they think that is there home. Am I being foolish, for taking them away? I don't want to baby my young girls, but I don't want then getting hard. Plus they still haven't started laying eggs..
I also read once they start laying eggs is when they can be mated.
