New member here and I'm just setting up my coops and researching the best chickens for producing lots of good-sized eggs to feed my grandson and share with my elderly, disabled friends and neighbors who are struggling to feed their families.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? My grandma raised me and it was my job to feed/ water, care and collect the eggs. Fast-forward, I'm now a grandmother and struggling to feed and raise my last teen eating machine alone as my daughter passed unexpectedly and I got the kids. I enjoyed the years at my grandma's and the silly antics of her chickens. I need a little silliness after life's difficulties.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? None yet. I just got two coops and need to figure out placement. I plan on at least 3 hens for starters, two ducklings and a gosling to act as guard.
(3) What breeds do you have? Undecided , but leaning to Black Sexlinks, Astralopes, Offington and Frizzle.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Fresh, healthy (non-GMO/pesticide-drug-laden, frankeneggs and being entertained by their silly antics. My grandson will be 18 soon and I'll be an empty-nester.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? After waiting 35+ years, I completed the Bexar County Master Gardener's program, including a one-year internship and obtained my certification. I have been a Harley owner since 1999 and have three Harleys. Unfortunately I've not been able to ride for the last 6 years and at almost 70, not sure I'll be able to ride... I'm only 4'10" and have a big Ole Harley...lol Switched to Harleys from raising Arabian horses for 30 years... much cheaper, less maintenance and expense...lol
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. All my family is in So. California w/youngest remaining daughter in No. Idaho. I have yet to meet my two youngest (2 & 5 yr old) grandsons. Hopefully, when it warms up.
I retired 4 yrs ago and spend my time avoiding housework by escaping outside to my garden...lol
Occasionally, I delivery flowers for a local flower shop... love the smiles they bring.
As far as other pets, I have 5 yard cats and a highly intelligent, stubborn, sneaky, high-energy rescue pup (possibly a Belgian Malinois/Staffordshire Terrier mix... I think there may be some greyhound or sighthound in the mix).
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? I've been following this group on Facebook. Decided I best join since I'm going to need help getting started and there's such a wealth of knowledge and community here... I want to be a part of it.
