a skunk ran right at me.....

it was sunday about 3:00pm. i was outside playing with the dogs and chickens.. when i saw a skunk under my truck.. i saw it before my dogs did and put them in the house really quickly.. then i went to go and make sure i wasnt seeing things... it was a skunk.. smaller than normal.. looked kinda like a baby... i was concerned about it being out in the day time.... rabies... dad got his 22 shotgun and threw a rock in its direction to see if it would react.... it did... i ran as fast as it could straight towards us and up the porch... i screamed and told dad not to shoot and and so he didnt... we jumped over the rail and into the house..... i went back outside to see it scamper across the drive way and into the pasture....

i told dad to not shoot cuz i really didnt think it was rabid.... rabid animals dont run to you in a straight line, and react to things... they also dont groom themselves... was this just a little baby that was lost??

im still concerned though... did i do the right thing? what eles should i do????

Skunks are very brave. If you threaten a healthy skunk it may come at you. They are actually attracted to noise and movement. If you move calmly they usually ignore you. I've almost tripped over a few in the pastures in the dark and all they do is look at me while I step around them. Usually they go on their way and are not a problem if you just leave them alone. If they repeatedly show up on the property and hang around though we usually eliminate them. The ones that stick around also tend to be the ones that are sick and looking for an easy meal to steal from our animals since they can't get their own.

oh good.. i didnt want to kill a skunk that wasnt rabbid... i mean, they dont pose a problem to my chickens.. at least i dont think they do... and all they can get is some cat food off the front porch but its a free feeder and i dont t hink itll hurt anything... it was a pretty animal...

skunks do eat eggs, will kill chickens and will tear a garden apart especially when sweet corn is just starting to come on.

Altho, they do kill and eat mice and bugs...so they aren't all bad.
