I have a plan. Currently, I have six sweet, lovely ladies who predictably give me five eggs per day, and they are beautiful--both the chickens and the eggs. Eventually, it would be nice to add a little color and variety to my flock. We are all aware of the talk of high-priced eggs, sold-out eggs, bird flu, etc. So, there are many families who are purchasing baby chicks in response. I believe two things are going to happen. When things get sorted out, many of these newly acquired chickens will no longer be wanted. The actual work of chicken-keeping and the wait for eggs will be more than some families want to continue. So, they will be looking to re-home their flock. That is where I plan to come in. I want a few more chickens, and I prefer them to be at least as old as my laying chickens. It would be my pleasure to relieve these families of the added responsibilities and accept these chickens into my own backyard flock. I mean no offense. It just seems like a happy solution for all.
I think it's an excellent plan. Just make sure you have a good quarantine area, stocked up chicken first aid kit, and practice strict biosecurity for your current chickens since there's no telling what situation they may have been in or what they were exposed to (parasites/diseases/inadequate nutrition etc). Safe bet they won't be marek's vax'd.
