This time of year, chicken do not spend a lot of time in the hen house, and it is so dry, the manure dries out quickly. Which was why, I was rather surprised, but something seemed to be smelling in there. Yesterday for sure it was smelling, so today I cleaned it all out, and lo and behold, in that place behind the platform that I was confident that I had completely blocked off, was an old nest of a dozen eggs. I know it is old because my count it pretty on daily.

One exploded...enough said,

SO I gave thorough sweep out, cleaned out the nests, made myself MORE confident that they cannot get behind there with a roll of extra chicken wire, and rebedded the nests.

So when one thinks they could not possibly have a hidden nest, well they can!

Yep, it happens! We went to Hawaii for a month and I wanted to make things easy on the house sitter so she just collected eggs from outside the coop, never went in it. When we got back I was short 1 hen. Looked everywhere for her and eventually found her in a dark corner floor of the coop. They must actually be that smart, she figured out how to keep them from daily collection. She was near death she had been on the pile for so long but quickly un-broodied when I carried her to food and water. I had to dig a hole and bury the whole beautiful pile of green eggs, too hot to save them, boo!
