A suggestion for new chicken owners

Summer vacation time is about here. Even if you aren't leaving town for that long-awaited trip, it is a good idea to have somebody lined up to care for your chickens. Family emergencies do happen.
Make sure the caretaker has spent some time with your flock and is at ease dealing with birds (many people are terrified of grown chickens). Observe the person filling feeders, cleaning and refilling waterers, securing the coop, etc.

I'm a new chicken owner and I do plan on going camping this weekend.

Leaving Fri afternoon and return Sun late morning. I agree with finding someone to watch over my flock. I'm lucky enough to have a girl that works for me at my day job. She attends an Agricluture class with her high school. They not only learn Ag stuff but alot of animal science and farm life in general. I had her come over last weekend to meet my hens and hang out and get to know them a bit.

Today I go to work and she tell me she now wants chickens.

She said she had no idea how cool they were as pets. She's looking forward to staying here while we are gone which is nice because I won't have to break the routine.

Family members and friends are always good to ask too, but if you have a Tech School in your area they may have an Agriculture Class and these kids are great help and expierenced with more then just cats and dogs.

Excellent advice! Another tidbit you may want to share is the best way to get them back into their pen if anyone gets out.
