So here's the story...Mavis (head chicken) was feather pecking Midge and Mazie really bad. After a week, their poor little butts were bare. So into chicken jail she went. (a little coop along side the main run) She stayed there for a week (that's the sentence for feather pecking).
I put her back with the flock after 1 week and now Mavis was not only pecking at Midge and Mazie, but now also Daisy, Etta, Esme and Greta. So back into chicken jail she went. (Second feather pecking offense lands you in solitary). So I moved this little coop away from the others. Sentencing for a second offense is 2 weeks.
I let her out today, at 1 & 1/2 weeks for good behavior.... I put her back in the coop with the others ...there she went, up on the roost next to Midge, grabbed her face and didn't let go. The drama begins.... So, here comes Ginger, Greta and Esme and they attack her. (I was quite nervous when this happened because I really thought there was going to be an injury). So, Esme is in her face jumping at her and really going at it, Greta is blocking Mavis from getting near Mazie and Midge and little Ginger is puffing her neck feathers up at her too. I felt like I was watching a womens prison' movie.
To the rescue comes Mister. Boy did he take control. He stood between Mavis and the others and completely took over. (here I am in the run and now I really want out) Mavis is now running away, and the others are telling her that they're not talking any more of her crap, and Mister is telling them all to cool it, but he is visibly very upset. After a while, things start to settle down and Greta, while not attacking her, is keeping her away from the others (she's such a good girl with a very cool head...she should be head chicken) anyway...
After about an hour, things have quieted down and it looks like everything may be ok. (Mavis still wants to be head chicken, so I know she may work her way back up, but I really hope Greta and Esme stay strong). I haven't seen her peck Midge and Mazie for a while now.
So, until tomorrow morning, all is calm...for now.
I have to say though, that I was so impressed with Mister. Besides all the food he calls them for (he backs away and lets them eat before he takes any and often gets none), and the great way he protects them, now I've seen how he keeps all the girls behaving.
He's such a good boy.
Part 2..tomorrow...
