I work with a person who found out I had chickens. That person saved egg cartons and gave them to me because she wanted eggs. I finally had a dozen for her. Upon delivering her the eggs there was an uncomfortable pause until she said, "$3, right? I'll get that to you." That has yet to happen.

My question is: is it a common practice for someone to provide empty egg cartons in exchange for free eggs?

Just wondering.

I personally don't sell my eggs, but prefer to give them away to friends (in exchange for empty egg cartons). It's your call though; if you told her $3 before you gave her the eggs and she still wanted them, its her fault. If you didn't tell her they were going to cost money, and sprang that on her when you gave her the eggs - I can understand her reluctance.

You might consider giving her a discount because she has been saving her empty cartons for you.

If she didn't pay extra for the carton herself then there should not be any hesitation. People at work bring me their cartons and I sell mine for $2/dozen which is my going price for a mix of my small and medium size bantam eggs. $1/per 1/2 dozen. They know they are getting healthy eggs and doing their part by recycling their egg carton. They shouldn't really have any more cartons andyway after they give you the initial one, right? It keeps going from them to you and then back again. If you don't get the $3 within a week, ask again. I have had to.
