Buff Orpington had her first egg today. Her first egg was chalky white and larger than the others who have been laying for months. Why the chalky white ?

Egg on left is most likely excess bloom.
Could probably scrape/scrub/wash it off.

aart, I thought the same so tried washing-scrubbing and it looked as if the white came off as the shell turned brown but when it dried the white cane back.
Am not worried about it, just find it interesting. Am looking forward to see today’s egg.

It's excess bloom. Bet it felt super slippery when you were washing it too. You have to work really hard to get ALL the bloom off an egg, that's why it "came back" as it dried. Also why I don't feel bad at all about washing off my hatching eggs and sanitizing them.

Being a new layer, these things will happen. Shouldn't be any problem.

Hard to say if bloom would all wash off....or could have been excessive calcium too.
What did you scrub it with?
Did it feel rough or 'slippery' when wet?
Some things cannot be fully understood.<shrugs>

Today’s egg is almost solid white.
I scraped it with a knife and the brown showed. When washing if felt grainy, similar to 400 grid sandpaper.
Yesterday’s egg was scrubbed with a very hard plastic scrubber.
