Though my sister's dad raised show chicken (cochins? and others for egg farm-had like 30 chickens.) I was not around during that project. I have had parrots, crows and ducks. I want a gentle small fluffy pet and eggs. So thinking silkies but maybe one other gentle hen that is less broody (so I hear) and lays good enough.. maybe a polish?
I dont have room to accommodate/maintain yard with egg-laying ducks .. ducks are really messy (I had 2 white Peking ducks and a green/white/black drake with rooster claws and turkey beak that was prolly a Mascovy or part Mascovy..they were colored easter chicks...<_<. I had them 9 years and 6 moves before a killer dog jumped our fence. Both peking ducks just randomly left eggs all over the place. The Mascovy was like a dog in a lot of ways. Social, territorial and would chase things and people out of our yard-The killer husky mix was just too big an opponent).

I have a non verbal teen son . He likes pets that are gently proactive. I have a very large -8 ft fenced- yard that I will allow them forage and fun in. I prefer to kennel/coop them in noon and at night for predator/weather safety (Rural AZ mtns location near Oracle). But though chickens prefer outdoors can they tolerate being in like an air carrier indoors during heat waves?
Would (2 hens)1 silky and 1 polish produce enough for our 5 eggs-doz eggs a week consumption? And still be calm and friendly enough to be cute pets and companionable to each other. If they like foraging it would be a bonus. There are no other animals unless you count all the lizards and geckoes that cohabitat here, nor any in foreseeable future (eventually waiting list for service dog will cycle est late 2021 when training finished).

Though the covid quarrantine and grocery store runs really brought it home, Ive been kicking the idea of having a modest amount of chickens for over a year. Had worry when my dog still was here (died of same hereditary as mum and the GSD grandmum who was mine), As he as rehomed to me he already had sketchy habits (rabbit killer).

So would these chickens fit the ...'bill' ?

Thanks for replies.
I remember that my sister's show Cochins (they were brilliant black and even had fluffy legs) looked cute but I never held them during my visit. Yes small eggs could be problematic. Pettable and just hang the yard with us is important aspect above production, but since they can , may as well do.
She never mentioned they were friendly. I remember that week I visited a mouse slipped thru to snack on feed and caused a ruckus before a horrifying massacre. Like a small scale Jurassaic Park raptor attack scene 0_0. When I realized 'chikin gunna eat wot it waants!'
Ive pet and held a silkie before is prolly why it stayed in my mind as future pet chicken

I am checking outer fencelines recently and as for a coop, it would be conversion of my old dog kennel. It is 4ft fencing with topper and the doghouse can easily become a roost since it was originally a playhouse/shed and the height is about 6 at the interior crown and is 4x8. It is pvc composite wood (slick plastic wood product) So would be easy to clean and occasionally hose out.
