I hatched a beautiful black pure bred Ameraucana last August. He was here to stay in hopes to be my sky watcher and to keep my hens together in a group. My rooster is an absolute sweetheart and wouldn't hurt a fly.
The problem is that he was too submissive. He wouldn't leave the comfort of the coop and only the most submissive hens would stay near him, which in return were being over bred. My coop and run are not good in the summer. I'm in the process of growing trees to make natural shading to cool it down. It's a furnace in there during the heat of the day which only lasts a few months out of the year. No matter how many fans I put in there or how man made shaded it is, nothing beats natural shade. It will be a few years before the trees are grown. In the mean time I need to free range and run cold water into the woods to make the flock comfortable, which I do.
I made the decision to sell him on CL. Within 5 minutes of my listing, I had 3 emails of those interested in him. I took the first email and they picked him up within a couple hours
I'm sure he went to a good home. I have a good feeling about the new owner. However, I'm just crushed I let him go.
The ladies that hung around him seem pretty happy. They finally got to leave the coop and free range until it was time to go back in. They've never had the opportunity to free range before and were all over eating dandelions, grass and bugs.
He was my first rooster too.
