(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Last Wednesday when they arrived from the hatchery at 7AM because my postman was concerned and called me at 6AM. I have only a 1 acre property but a dedicated old dog run with a huge doghouse to convert into a coop. For now we made it through their first week of life and 10/10 are still here=).

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

All 10 of the arrivals from my pet chicken have survived with serious pasty butt issues it seems to be subsiding, but I don't want to lose one due to my poor husbandry practices. Additionally, I am currently imprinting them on all the cockroaches I can dustbuster up per day this brood rocks as a hunter killer squad!

(3) What breeds do you have?

Only 1 Black Sumatra hopeful they will kill whatever is feeding my backyard scorpions and cockroaches so Terminix can eliminate them from inside my new house.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Internet searches and a great and informative Thread on this breed!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Hating our political scene in the United States, Computer Cyber Security, and dog rescues(I basically live in Mexico).

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

3 dogs one cat, 3 rescue dogs(sending them north to Illinois in August), married, lived in Germany for 12 years, Disabled Vet, Army Nurse.

Welcome to BYC! Sounds like you are getting things figured out pretty well! This is my very favorite website for gleaning information about just about anything "chicken"! If you have any specific questions or concerns, fire away, and we will do our best to help out or point you in the right direction!

These chicks have been a godsend! I recently developed a stress related medical condition due to the current state of our political affairs. These chicks take all those worries away, they require so much care and attention and I enjoy nurturing them and my hair is now growing back! =) It is time for me to slow down now in life and just care for my own back yard! I'm jealous you have all probably had this experience for the better part of my adult life ;P

Chicken therapy is a real thing...I can't tell you how many times I head out back with my coffee cup (and a little something for the crew too!) and just enjoy their antics! Also, and maybe not on everybody's list of positives, I really enjoy a good solid day of coop cleaning, building, fence construction/repair, etc. Somehow a non-conflict day filled with good old fashioned hard work really fills my tank! :)

I am so excited about what I will be doing to that old 10x10 dog house to make it a viable chicken coop, I already have plans to plumb it so I don't have to haul water(installing an interior exterior nipple system), add layer boxes to the out side(accessed from inside), we are hurricane proofing the trees next week so will use chopped down trees for roosts but cut to length. I'm not totally bitten by the chicken math I just want them to have a suitable enclosure they want to return to at night and visit during the day as we are in a drought down here still. Plus hopefully one of these 10 will bond with me and let me tell them what is on my mind. Supposedly this Black Sumatra breed has the potential to bond with people and I really would like another animal friend. Otherwise they are always welcome to my mesquite trees and feed but I think we are all going to make this work! I do enjoy watching my neighbors bantam TV but don't enjoy the peahen's noise from another property since I can't see what they are up to. The Bantams remind me of the old Benny Hill show as they run all over the place

Awesome plans! Would love to see pics as things begin to come together! My birds aren't super friendly (like my dog who thinks I stoop down just to smell his breath!), but if I have treats, I definitely become a rock star! :)
