Hello, I am glad I found this site. Lots of great information. I have started my homestead, Ackerbau Homestead. It may appear I have a lot of land but I only have one acer. My homestead sits on a third of it in my front yard. I built an 800 or so square foot garden fenced in with a coop shed and free range. One section is for the three sisters... Corn, beans, and squash. The larger has numerous veggies. I have three pullets. Two Ideal 236's and a Rhode Island Red. They are named Spiegelei, Rührei, and Abigail. The names mean fried eggs and scrambled eggs in German. Abigail means "to bring joy" in biblical terms. Later I'll add a small Bantam from a friends coop after they are hatched. She will be called Henrietta. Some of my veggies and eggs will be given to the Prodisee Pantry to help feed people in need.
I got my chicks yesterday when I went to a local feed and seed store in Robertsdale Al. I've never heard of an Ideal 236 until yesterday. I'm all for good white egg layers.
It's nice to have a place for good information like this forum. I've learned a lot and its helped in my decisions with the design and chicks wanted. May god bless you and your backyard chickens!
