hi group,have 3 IB chicks[well 9 weeks old]
just saw a spaulding for the first time, and "OH MY GOODNESS"have been offered a 3 month old male
have heard from this site and others, that 7/8[sorry dont know what that means],is the max for this mix?
i know that the "java",cannot be free ranged, but spauldings can?
heard that,if there is another colony of peafowl, birds will stray. my question is-
if ,one bird, maybe one of mine,or the spaulding strays, will the others follow?
should i just keep my what i have?,or risk the spaulding.
its is 3 months old,how long should i keep it penned in?

I don't think you would have to worry. Spauldings are very pretty aren't they! I was thinking about someday having one myself, or maybe just have some greens...I am not sure yet.

Anyways yes spauldings can be free-ranged. I think adding one more bird to your three will be fine...UNLESS if you would then have more males than females. You kind of want to have more females for the guys because the males generally like to have their own female.

I hope you get the spaulding.

7/8 is not the highest % you can go with a spalding the more PURE GREEN you breed into it the HIGHER the % will go but it will always be a SPALDING (once a Spalding always a Spalding).

Well, I think you asked how long to keep them penned before and everyone told you to keep them penned until the age of One (1) year old. Then they would be old enough and big enough to more or less take care of them selves.

Spalding will still be a little flighty due to the green blood in it so it may or may not stick around.

I like the spalding in the new colors. If high % good odds it will take off. Like Steve said they are more flighty.

Some spalding are as high as 31/32. Hard to tell from greens, at least for me...

Steve like you said once a spalding alway a spalding. So how can we have a Jade without it being a splading?????? As you may know Jade was found in the spalding.....Like to know how the UPA can list it as anything but spalding ?????? Myself I don't have Jade

Just had to add this here:

This is our baby 100% java from a little while back now when she was in that manky looking stage.
He/she loves attention and closes her eyes if stroked or even when I talk to her.
Way tamer than any of the other chicks I had this year

Maybe because she got handled A LOT as a chick.

She is petite and is getting yellow on her face already so we are thinking girl (wishful thinking here).

Aww, what a cute java, I sure do want one!

I did ask on a peafowl website once about free-ranging green peafowl and if anyone has done it. One person said they did do it. They said that the greens did roam more than the blues and that the blues would stay in their yard but the greens would sometimes visit the nextdoor neighbor. He did say thought that even though the greens roamed more he said they always returned to his yard for night. He said they were a lot more wild acting then the blues and that the males would fight in trees!

He eventually stopped free-ranging the greens because he was feeling uneasy because all the neighbors were really interested in the greens and wanted one so he was afraid someone would take one I think.

As for Spaudlings he said they would copy the India blues by staying in the yard, but when he introduced the greens the spauldings followed the greens.

Anyways I think it also depends on the yard. If the person next door has a yard that the birds like more than yours then maybe they will go over there.

That is a real good question and I will be sure to ask about it at the Convention. I don't have any of the Jades ether they were over priced and not all that good looking of a bird, kinda like the Taupe they look like a Cameo to me.
