In the Brooder
Hello from Portland! We have four chicks arriving on April 17: Black Australorp, Barnevelder, and two Easter Eggers. I've spent many many hours on this site already to help inform our coop design. I finally started digging the foundation for the coop this week; it will have a footprint of 6 x 12. The coop will likely be 6 x 5, though I keep vacillating as 6 x 4 would be easier to construct and clean. Due to "chicken math" I want to coop to be comfortable for 6 hens. We should be able to free range them most days though there is the threat of coyotes and raccoons.
We have an extra-size lot that feels like a little forest in the middle of the city. Between talking about getting chickens for years, having extra time at home to prepare, our neighbors with chickens moving, and my nearly 12-year-old's love for neighborhood hens, it feels like the right time to finally make it happen.
