I am totally new to this, first post here. I have 2 chicks that are 10 days old, I am going to add 2 more that are 3 days old. The 2 I have are inseparable almost like they are joined at the hip. Will they have issues with the new ones I am adding? Or are they too young to care. Should I separate them for a bit maybe with a divider.? I have a large rubbermaid storage tub they are in right now that has lots of room (at least for chicks). Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

They are too young to care at that age. They will like to have a bigger group!

Last week we put in day old chicks with some others that were 1 week old and had no problems at all. We made sure the heat lamp had temps warm enough for the new ones and that it was fairly close to the food/water and made sure there were cooler places for the older ones. Also plenty of feeder and waterer space. Watch close.

We checked before we went to bed and they were all sleeping and everyone was fine the next day. We watched the new ones close for pastey butt.

They may have a little bit of pecking issues in the beginning, but the sooner they are introduced the better. Having a red light on them helps with the pecking, but issues should be sorted out by the end of the day or even easier if you do it when it's dark. We added 6 chicks to 1 week pekin ducklings, then the next we added a wee duckling to the now 3 week pekin ducklings and the 2 week chicks with no problems

Hi Brian,

I just wanted to say welcome. I am fairly new myself.

Good luck with your chicks. Let us know how you make out with them.

I got my new chicks this morning, a 6 day old Speckled Sussex and a 3 day old Black Star. I added them to the other chicks (they are about 12 days old) and the Sussex, is doing fine with the others, but the black star keeps to herself, sleeps alone and doesn't eat as much, (this has only been 2 hours BTW) She is a lot smaller, she likes to sit in my hand where the 2 older ones are scared to death of me. I feel bad with her all alone by herself. I move her to the others and she mingles, eats a little but if then just goes off by herself and lays down again, won't pile up with the other 3. Is this normal? She doesn't want to drink either, but seems healthy. Should I just leave her alone and she will adjust? It is sad seeing this little chick sitting alone by herself.
