Hello, I'm new to the chicken world so a lot of common sense that chicken people have I might lack. That being said I recently rescued a rooster I'm told he is around 6 months of age. I couldn't find a home for him so we keep him bought a Chicken coop that has 3 nesting boxes we also put up a pen for him, I'm told he needs a couple of hens, I'm told pullets around the same age. I've got the word out with local farms and friends that raise chickens but so far no luck. I've only had the rooster for a week. I do think he is lonely he will follow the dogs along the fence line and seems very comfortable with the dogs, cats and people not much seem to phase him. I'm told he looks like he is a mix of Rhode Island red and something else. I'm looking for info on possible where to buy pullets and what breed to buy for a first time owner. I live in the Northeast in RI we do get snow and a few cold days but nothing extreme. Any ideas or info would be appreciated
Thanks

Have you posted him on CL? You can also join local FB Poultry groups and see what people are looking to rehome or sell.
It sounds like you bought yourself a pre-fab coop so you don't have enough room for much of a harem for him. As in maybe one or two girls.
That pre-fab will likely need a large upgrade on the run too.

It sounds like he is a full-sized fowl, not a bantam. So look for full-sized fowl pullets. We all have our favorite breeds but those are based on our personal preferences, not yours. If you have preferences, color, pattern, egg shell color, whatever follow those. But the more restrictions you put on it the harder they are to find.

You can look in the "Where am I? Where are you!" section of this forum and see if you can find an active Rode Island thread. Then chat with your neighbors.

You can call your county extension office. There is a fair chance they can tell you where to find some pullets.

Maybe talk to people at the feed store. They may know someone but they may also let you put an advertisement on a bulletin board.

yes I think it is prefab it's all we could find at the time. although it's pretty sturdy made by some Amish people , we aren't ready for him and it's temporary, my brother will be building a coop this summer we do have a good size run for him once I'm sure he knows where he lives he will be allowed to roam when I'm home. What is CL?

this is the pictures of the rooster and coop /pen

That's a pretty nice set up.
Probably going to need some predator proofing.

Looks like he has a bit of frostbite.
