It's a day after loosing Molly...i've sat here looking through henderson chicken chart and have desided that next spring i will add 2 more chicken to my small flock...i want a high yelding egg layer that will lay through the winter... i like the New hampshire red but all so like the wyandotts, although the wyandotts are moderate egg layers......although being from canada and living in the states now i would really like to find some Chantecler's which are hard to find.....i'm also looking to add color to my flock so my daughter and i can show in 4-H....ugh what should i be looking for???

Sorry to hear about Molly.
If you just want eggs, White leghorns are the best. They will start laying sooner than most breeds, and lay longer into the winter than most breeds.
The Leghorns do come in a variety of colors but the colored ones are less prolific.
Wyandotts may give you both eggs and color that you are looking for.

I like NHRs They wont lay quite as well as white leghorns but they are calmer and easier to handle. Never had Wyandottes but I think there good for cold climates. RIRs lay almost as good as WLs. Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks are pretty birds that are calm and lay good. Wish you all the luck.
