yesterday ended up being quite the busy day in the coop and runs.

while at the feed store i was told that ducks were on sale buy 2 get 1 free as they were outgrowing the showroom floor cages and needed to get gone. they are already 3 weeks old and huge! ADD 3 young ducks to the flock (rather add them to one of the side runs to finish a bag og starter and get them fence time with the hens before introducing them)

then, i had some friends over for dinner who brought me 5 laying hens. seems they had rescued 10 hard bred (almost no tail feathers at all and totally bald saddles) from someone who had way to many birds to handle and a rough rooster. they didn't need them all and last sunday i had offered to take half of them and last night they showed up...

so, in about 6 hours, i doubled the size of my chicken flock and added 3 ducks. i may have a problem...

so here's the count as far as i can tell:
3 mystery ducks
3 production reds
2 Ameraucana
2 leghorn (actually, maybe 1 leghorn and 1 mystery leghorn look alike)
2 buff orpingtons
1 Polish

I would have almost fainted! So many new chickens to adjust to your home & routine. Hope your coop is PLENTY big enough! I'm still working with the 2 Araucaca hens a friend donated to my coop. They are keeping my rooster from roaming, (since my original BA hen has gone broody) These 2 new girls are adapting pretty well, seems like they adore the menue here.

Best of luck to you & your rescued hens!

pretty excited...the last "laying" hens i bought took several months to start laying again but not these rescue girls...

of the 5 i brought in yesterday, 3 of them laid today!!! whoohoo... now if we can just get some feathers back on these ladies!
