I successfully hatched 7 little chickies in my incubator and momma Welsummer hatched one (her first one) on her own! Even though it’s still cold here, I went ahead and put the incu babies out with momma, trusting that she would know best. And guess what?? Mom on really does know best! She accepted all 8 chicks and is one proud momma
I have questioned her mothering abilities a few times (like when they were a week old and she led them out in the 40 degree rain to scratch around...or when it was 33 degrees and snowing and she had them out), But she always stays right with them, warming them when they start to fuss. It’s such a joy watching her raise them and listening to how she talks to them constantly, telling them what to do
Hens go broody when you don’t want them to… and won’t go broody when you do.
