So I am new to this site, as well as to raising chickens. Ive raised most other livestock, (hogs, rabbits, sheep, goats, list goes on) but chickens are definitely new to me. We were given 8 Buff Brahma Pullets, not sure the age still you. We were hoping to raise these chicks to eventually get a male, and have some eggs. Unfortunately everyone I've had contact with tells me this breed is not really known for there egg laying capability. I am married, we have four children ranging in ages from 17 to 8. My eight year old daughter has claimed these chickens as her babies no one else (siblings) is to handle them :) We live on 10 beautiful acres and are in the process of building a coop for these babies, that's how I found BYC and have read numerous articles which are very informative which led me to join.

So my question for you experienced chicken raisers, What breed is best for eggs? How many males should we get once we do? Anyone out there have Buff Brahma's, if so what are there temperament, and what do you use yours for? What are major no no's in the chicken world? How big is you're coop?

I look forward to interacting with ya'll and thanks for taking the time to read this..

Have a blessed day!!!

Hello, Deanna, and welcome to BYC. Unless you planning on hatching chicks you do not need a rooster. Hens lay whether or not a rooster is present. Generally one rooster per flock of 10 or so is adequate to assure fertility. Sex links, leghorns, Australorps, RIR, Rocks are all good production birds, but 8 Brahma pullets will produce as many eggs as a small family needs.

I love my Brahmas! They lay well enough for me and are sweet birds that like human contact. They are good broodies, they will take care of sick or hurt birds, and my dark brahma sings with me. She can't hold a tune but she tries hard. Production birds tend to die for no reason at a young age.

I'm a homesteader and I have a mixed flock. I breed Polish for selling, and looking forward to breeding black copper marans. You don't need a production bird on a homestead or farm, just let chicken math take it's course.

Here. Have a mixed flock Deanna.

Welcome! So far I love my brahmas! They get along with each other very well so far (ages 6-8 weeks). They're supposed to be calm docile and not as vocal or flighty IE good around families & neighbors. That's just the tendency of the breed though every chicken is different. Mine are still young but they will be layers and over time some will be culled for meat. Roosters aren't needed to produce eggs, but one rooster would be enough. I think with 8 brahma pullets you'll have more than enough eggs (about 1200 per yr give or take) and a lovely flock for your family.
