Advice for a newbie

Hey fellow TEXANS! I joined this site to learn about keeping chickens, and want to get a small flock soon. I live in Southwest Texas (Eagle Pass to be exact) 2 hours SW of San Antonio.

I was wondering if anyone else was in the SA area and had chickens. Specifically which breeds do best in the South Texas heat, and where I can get some pullets. I want to keep a small flock, about 3-4, for laying eggs.

I've had several of the standard feed store breeds and haven't lost a chicken to heat -- but heat is the challenge, and they must have shade and a good breeze in the heat of summer. Here is a thread about the kind of open air setup they do best in, down here:
