Just want to see how others have handled this. I have three chicken coops. One coop has 10 hens around two & half years old they had a roo for about a year & I hatched my second flock from them. I got rid of the roo because he was trying to attack me. Second coop has 16 hens & I added a year old roo to the flock because I wanted more chickens.
They all free range so I collected 48 eggs & hatched 38 chicks. So, my third coop has 38 chickens in it not sure of the gender yet they are almost 3 months old. I think I have around 10 cocks in the third coop.I'm gonna get rid of the extra cocks but want to at least have one roo for each coop.
I was thinking I should wait to add the other roos to the other coops when they are around a year old. Any suggestions on how I should handle this? I also want to start letting the new flock range pretty soon.
One more question I also want to move the older roo from the coop he lives in now to the older hens coop. He likes older woman & gets along better with them. I'll do this when the other roos are a year old & I can move them into their new coops. What you think will it work?

The good news is that when you put one rooster into a coop with hens he usually doesn't have a problem establishing himself at the top of the pecking order, especially if he is over a year old.

You might need to supervise the free ranging at first. Depending on the temperament of the older rooster, there could be some chasing, but I would think the younger ones would back down.

Thanks, for your response. I think my plan will work. It worked the last time. I'll cull the cocks in coop # 3 pretty soon & only keep 2 then when they get old enough I'll add a roo so I have at least 1 roo in each coop. Might keep 2 in coop # 3 will see.

you have a real system going on. i would like two or three coops, but it's just not feasible right now. i've got 3 roosters w/6 girls. TOO MANY. i'm culling soon.
