Well today has been a bit of a nightmare all around, but I'll spare you all the gory details. I have a little spalding who had a rough time getting out of the egg today. I had to peel a little to help him but he pushed out on his own with no blood and a decent navel. However he appears to have very little control over his neck muscles and is doing the star gazing thing and then he topples over backwards. I tried getting some water with vitamins in him but he was not too cooperative. Any suggestions for this condition?

I had a few bronze chicks this way 2 years ago. Thankfully with me dipping their beaks for two days they eventually came out of it on their own but I have heard cases where it comes back later and the bird does not survive. I've read it's vitamin deficiency thats the cause but I find that hard to believe as it was only in my Bronze, noone else. type "Stargazing" in the searchbox here and there is threads about it in other forums.

I did do a search before posting in the Peafowl section. It actually looks like he is slowly getting a little more control over it. It's funny it was your Bronzes, because his momma is my brand new Bronze BS hen, and he is her first chick I've hatched. This hasn't been a great hatch so far out of 10, 2 were late quitters, I had to remove a silver that pipped out the bottom of the egg nowhere near the air space and I do not think it is going to make it, I have 2 out, one dark pied that looks great and the little bobble head spalding. 5 are still sitting in the hatcher. We had torrential rains again, so our barn flooded again, and our sump went down in the basement so it looks like we'll be replacing our furnace. When it rains it Pours!

yeah, it sounds like a vitamin deficiency to me as well. When my birds have the inability to hold their head up (vitamin deficiency) I give them Polyvitamin drops WITHOUT IRON....alot, diluted with water and see the improvement in about 24 hours.

I had my first one that was like that for about a day neck kept turning to the left and she would fall over to that side and did not walk well. After some good council and guidance from a couple of people in the pea section.. I was told to just give them 24 -48 hours to work the kinks out.. She made steady progress as the hours ticked by, and is now doing quite well. So give it some time..

Peachicks that hatch from the pointy side of the egg also gets this, that's why I don't think 100% that it's caused by a vitamin shortfall.
I agree i had a few hatch out like this they all got better in a couple days unless they stayed in the shell to long then they had leg and or feet issues.
The bubble butt chicks always take a bit longer to get to their feet also
The only time i have ever seen wry neck here was and still is

do once a in awhile is in my ducks, a couple days of poly visol fixed them rite up but they got wry neck after they were about a week old.

Thanks all, I guess I'm just a nervous momma. I am happy to report that his neck has resolved itself and he is walking around and picking at the others like a normal chick. He was the first to internally pip but then it took a long time to come out of the shell, and I think he may have had a bit of a kink in his neck that just needed to be stretched out. As of this morning we have 2 silvers out, 1 dark pied, 1 spalding and an exhausted white who is still drying in the hatcher, 2 ext. pips just sitting there, and 1 more "I pipped in the wrong place egg". The silver I was worried about looks like a brand new chick this am, amazing what a night of rest will do. Once the slow pokes are out I'll post some baby pics. Again, thanks to all that answered this post, Dylan's Mom
