First off, I’d like to thank all the wonderful BYC members for sharing their knowledge, stories, and pictures. I have gotten so much great information from these forums. Thank you!

Some background information… I recently got 4 WH ducks and will be starting work on their coop with attached run, probably around 8ft x 25ft (maybe longer depends on utility lines) and 8ft high. I plan to have part of the run covered in wire and the other part in corrugated PVC roof. Under the roofing I will be trying the deep litter method. Under the wire will be their “pond” with pea gravel. I am thinking it would be nice for them to have some greenery so I was thinking about putting in brushes. I’m thinking they should go in the part with the pea gravel as the deep litter may get too deep or could burn the trunks. I’ve read that evergreen plants are best. So my question to all of you is, have you tried plants inside runs and how did it go? Which plants worked best? I live in central Colorado, zone 5, at an elevation of 6,000 ft.

And because you can never get enough duckling pictures I am including pictures of my 4 girls. They are Nami, Violet, Petunia, and Puddles (named by nephew). I have only had them two days but I’m already in love.

I have zebra grass inside of my aviary, its not as sharp as pampas grass, also you can google "plants safe for ducks" and get a list of what is safe to have around them.

I did look into plants that are toxic or safe but the lists were so long it was a bit overwhelming. I was looking to see what had/hadn't worked for others. But I will defiantly make sure the plants are safe before I put them in.

The zebra grass looks lovely and I do like that it changes in the different seasons. It would also work for my climate zone. I think I'll be putting it on my short list. Thank you for the suggestion.

Not evergreen in zone 5, but I have day lilies around my pond and they stand up well to trampling by ducks. The hostas do ok, I think the heat is worse on them than the ducks. And my elephant ears also do ok with the ducks
