I am new to chickens and started out by hatching out 10 australorp eggs. One of the chicks was born with slightly weak legs. Now, at about a week old his left leg appears very stiff, and today the toes on that leg are now crooked.

Is this something genetic? An injury? A vitamin deficiency?

He seems to be getting around ok, eating, drinking, and pooping fine. Sleeping more than the others (maybe it is harder work for him to eat, drink, walk, etc).

Should I do anything for him? Or just wait it out?

He is on medicated chick starter, bedding is paper towel. I have not added any vitamins to the water.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Put some Vit/Electrolytes in his water and scramble him some eggs. He may need some protein. I wouldn't think it was genetic, things just happen that you have no control over.

Not sure if this is the case here, but I know that crooked toes is a sign of a vitamin deficiency, so I think the suggestion to put some vitamins in the water is a good one. Good luck! (I LOVE my Australorps - great hens!)
