Advice needed.

Hi everyone I am new here,Also new chicken owner first time owning chickens. I am looking for some information from experienced chicken owners. I have purchased what I was told 3 silkie hens. I got them at 5 days old and they are now 5 weeks old. The guy who I purchased them from Later said they are gold tops. Which am reading aRe a cross between A silkie x light sussex. Two of the chicks have 4 toes and my 3rd chick has 5 toes. They all have black skin. I chose silkie as I read they dont fly. These also fly around. Any advice/opinions welcome, Thank you xx

Silkies don't fly because of their silkied feathering. The cross chicks you have are normal feathering so they are able to fly.

The size of this one's comb suggests it is a cockerel. Did the seller explain how he/she knew they were hens/pullets?

Hi thanks for your post. The breeder did not Say how who knew they were hens. We just said silkie hens only so he picked 3 out, alot were yellow in colour but the ones he picked out for us were more tanned in colour.

Silkies of either sex can be any color. Silkies are very hard to sex when young and I know of no accurate way to sex 5 day old chicks; possibly vent sexing. DNA sexing is accurate but very costly and I rather doubt anyone would use it to sex silkie chicks.

If you specified that you wanted silkies, this seller was not being upfront when he/she sold you cross birds. And to claim they would be pullets is questionable.

The number of toes also, needlessly, confirms they are crosses.

I would make the seller know you're aware of the deception and not happy with these birds. Perhaps the seller will make it right.

Yeah we contacted the seller and When We questioned the type of silkie cross they were he said Silkies at first the whole conversation was a bit weird anyway he then said light sussex cross = goldtops. We then said we asked for silkies hens, He replied with “ you bought the wrong chickens, I didn’t sell the wrong chickens. He is a Well established breeder so I naively believed this guy. So I have 3 chickens what could all be boys.

Just reading this ticks me off! Well established or not the guy was being a jerk. I also sell so I guess that makes me a breeder and I would never sell without being sure the buyer understood what they were buying. I'm seeing too many posts where people were ripped off and it's sad; just to make a buck!
