I will be getting my chickens soon, only three, I was wanting to add a small rooster or full size I have not decided on breed, do you think it would be too much for my girls as they mature. I love roosters, always have. It has taken me 20 years to finally get chickens so I am super excited, and really want a roo! Their coop is 6x8x8tall with a 16x8 covered run as well as they will free range at times, under supervision. I do not want a large flock, as these will mostly be my babies. Thank you for your input! My hens are Orpingtons and a maran.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I'm a bit concerned about the fact that you will have one rooster for only two hens. It's recommended to have at least 8 hens for one rooster. But then I also know many chicken owners who keep a few hens with one rooster. So I think you'll be good. Definitely look into a docile rooster though. Orpingtons, australorps, sussex and faverolles are breeds I would recommend.

Good luck to you! I love small flocks as well!

I'm glad you joined our community.

You may want to get more hens if you're going to have a rooster. Roosters can be hard on the hens, causing feather loss and stress. Some roosters do fine with only a couple of hens, however, so you can certainly try getting one. Just be prepared that you may have to either get more hens, or get rid of the rooster in the future if problems occur.
