I have 2 boxes with chicks in them, approx 2-3 weeks old. I have the 1 gallon plastic waterers that I got at TSC. It never fails that this feeder gets filled with bedding and so then they cant drink. That and they ply in it I guess cause their bedding ends up soaked. Well I'm so smart, I go to Walmart and get a water bottle. Works fine, but I need more water bottles, and in one box they played with the water and let most of the water run out into the floor.

Any advice on watering my young-uns without the headache?

I know mine did the same thing, major pain! Did you put the waterers up on bricks, it may not look like they'll reach it-but they will. Just watch them, they'll stretch up and drink, if they don't then lower it a bit. Hope this helps!

I put a fairly big piece of plywood in there to rest the waterer on... big enough so that they can't kick a lot of shavings into it. It also helps keep it stable so they can't tip it. Doesn't keep ALL the shavings out, but most of them. And I fill the trough with marbles so they can walk in it without drowning or kicking the water out.

I had the same problem until I found these waterers at http://www.premier1supplies.com/detail.php?prod_id=30964&cat_id=141

I
used the 1 liter size. I made a wire bale and duct taped it on to a bottle. You will need to locate the center of the bail and put a slight bend in it to keep it hanging level. I then bent a wire hook to the proper length and hung it in side of the brooder. Suddenly clean waterers.

The pan is much shallower and narrower than the waterers that screw on to a mason jar. So even if you sit it inside the brooder the chick can't stand in it.
