I am fairly new to the whole raising chickens, I noticed a few weeks ago 1 one my hens had what looked to be vent gleet so we treated her with Epsom salt bath and apple cider vinegar in everyone's water daily, that seemed to help clear her up, now I noticed I have 3 hens with white discharge from there vents. On inspection this morning for the first time I noticed what I believe is lice on one of my hens and one of our chicks. Can the vent gleet and lice come hand in hand...!? And what's the best way to treat both. Thanks :)

Welcome to BYC!!

Diarrhea and lice are very common in tandem--whether or not that can develop into vent gleet, I'm not sure. But I would treat for the lice with pyrethrin dust: you have to wear a mask and sprinkle dust around the vent, under the wings, around the thighs, everywhere but the head (you don't want them inhaling this stuff as it can irritate lungs). Apple cider vinegar in the water should help with the diarrhea (1T per gallon), but don't use this in a metal waterer. You can also feed some yogurt, oatmeal, or soaked or fermented whole grains to help as well. If they don't respond in a few weeks, you may have to do more vent gleet treatment. Good luck!

Thanks for your help ladies.. I purchased and powdered all the chickens and the coop and there dusting wholes around the yard.. Well dusting yesterday I was able to look at the chickens vents and all vents look clear except for one hen who has a sore on the edge of her vent.. So I am hoping that the diarrhea will clear up with the tx of the lice..
