Ok, my peeps are 4 weeks old, seems to me some of them are looking pretty much like Roos, I bought them at TSC, 5 were from pullet bin, 1 from straight run bin. I know they can get mixed up...here is my question...i was really hoping to get at least 5 hens, and that doesn't seem to be the case, I am pretty sure I have a couple of roos....so here is where i need the advice...if i have say 3 roos, which i intend to see if i can sell them....will i ever be able to get more hens and add to my flock..and if so when is the best to do it, I am headstrong about wanting at least 5 hens, for the eggs....but I know that it is hard to introduce new hens to an already established flock, I cannot get me another coop, so that is out of question...what do I do....I have limited space and resources...I am hoping that what i see, is not true, but the fact of the matter is they sure look like roos...i love all my birds, but honestly only wanted one roo to make my 5 ladies happy...I am not going to be happy with just three hens....so what do i do....how do I do it and when....Please give me some advice here, my dear boyfriend doesn't get the chicken math thing, so with the space i have I can only house 6...ugghhh, i need your help and knowledge my BYC friends!!!!
First two pics, chick out of straight run bin....hoping this was a Roo.....

In many cases, by the time you can confirm you have roos, "chick days" have ended. You will need to find someone within driving distance that sells young stock. You wouldn't want the age differential to be too great, I am guessing. You'll have to be alert on Craigslist to find what you want. There are a few online places that sell just 3 chicks, but expect to pay far more for each in shipping costs.

As for selling the roosters, the market gets really flooded with unwanted roos. If you are fortunate, you will simply find someone who will take them.
Hundreds and hundreds of unwanted roos were purchased over the last 30 days and soon enough, those too will be appearing on Craigslist and mostly, free to take.

If you post pictures I'm sure people will be able to tell you boys from girls. Also at this age if you get some more intergrating will be easier. Its when you have older birds such as 5 or 6 month olds then get day old that it becomes harder to intergrate.

Thanks and I will post new pics as soon as I get my coffee in me and the sleepies out of my eyes...and yeah, I know i prolly will have to give them away, which makes me sad...i have spoiled these lil birds to no end...i don't want to have to, but...as i said, space and resources are limited....just a hard thing....ughhh!!!

I have been told that it is a SLW (she is a very large bird, towers over all the others and is the same age!!!).....oh I sooo hope that is all...just one!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!

I have two RIR and a SLW. My SLW looks like your first one though the head is less feathered as mine are 4 weeks. My two RIR look like the last two except both have the more yellowish comb of the second bird. I am a total novice but if I was guessing I would guess the last one is the roo and the others are hens.

Most family owned feed stores carry chicks through out the spring and summer, you dont have to rely on TSC. Many times they are marked better as well so you know what you are getting. (not always but many times)
