Yeah, its definitely less work for the ducks to do the hatching. I definitely feel your sympathy - I've lost ducks as well. We sometimes place our feelings on our animals, but they don't think in the same realm as us.
Pekins will lay upwards of 300 eggs per yr. But, it doesn't mean they would become broody. However, there is always the chance. I'm betting if you try again in the spring, she might be old enough and ready to brood.
