We have a Buff Flock of 8 hens and 1 Roo. While several hens are missing feathers from mating, one in particular super friendly hen is bearing the brunt of his mating.
She has feathers missing to the skin on the back of her head, and 'wing blades' as well. Not bleeding, yet.
The skirts do not cover these areas either.
The Roo is otherwise friendly, docile with us and an excellent protector for his hens. But he is an aggressive mater, I have seen him pull a hen several feet by the nape of their necks prior to mating
Other than spraying antiseptic, what can we do to protect this hen?
