AHHHHHHH piping!

AHHHHH! WE HAVE A PIP!!! So I have a couple questions. *cough* A lot *cough*

1) How long is it from pip to zip?

2) When should I assist? So like max pip length break till I need to help. And how long until I need to help if no progress has been made?

3) What should I use for bedding?

4) How can they go without food or water since hatch?

Any tips are appreciated!

Hey!! Congrats
So.. i am not a professional but i have hatched a couple already, so here is what i know

1) It can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, but it only becomes worrying after 24hours

2) Like mentionned, 24hours. Try to touch the egg as little as you can if it isn't in trouble to maintain humidity. If the soft outer layer is to become dry, i spray it lightly with warm CLEAN water, so that the chick doesn't get stuck. Do not break any shell yourself, as there are still blood vessels on the outer membrane of the egg, and if you were to break one the chick would probably bleed to death.

3)I would use something soft, but not something that could get in the shell as the chick is hatching. Eg. Soft dried grass, but not sand nor dirt. Otherwise, anything hard will probably do. Just make sure the egg is always kept warm

4) the yolk! It is filled with nutrients, which the embryo absorbs through its belly for the development. Right before the hatching process, it absorbs the rest of it to gain enough energy to break the shell. The actual shell is also a vital source of minerals & calcium during the incubation period.

That is completely normal!
You will hear that many MANY more times in the next couple months

I would leave it and wake up as early as you can to check on it, but if the egg is kept warm and humid nothing should happen to it. Hoping everything goes well!!
