What a traumatic morning my girlfriend had. Refilling her coffee cup and gazing out the kitchen window was the prettiest looking kitty cat she had ever laid eyes on. Not sooo! Too big for an ordinary house cat she thought. It just lay there basking in the morning sun on her back lawn. She said it was amorously staring at our chicken coop. It finally registered that it was the bobcat that we had seen 3 times before. One of those times to runoff with one of our chickens in its mouth. This time she was able to snap 2 pictures before it meandered off. One on her cell phone and one on her portable camera. The cell phone shot didnt turn out very well or I would post it. Patiently waiting for the camera film to be developed. About an hour later, a tom, a hen and 8 baby turkey visited our feeders as usual. Thankfully the babcat had left. When she let our chickens and 2 ducks out of the coop shortly after, she found the birds were huddled in the corner and reluctant to come out. They were smart to sense trouble thank goodness. An unwelcomed predator or a sense of danger sends our birds for cover every time! We have 3 roo's but not much match for a bobcat. I will not have much choice but to contend with it when I get back up there next week if I see it. The surrounding neighbors have lost a good portion of their birds recently also. Theirs free range, mine do not as I have a fenced run to contain them. The bobcat could scale it with no problem if it had a mind to.
Aside from that, the good news is we got our third egg today. This one wasnt broke and she laid it in the nesting box. Good girl! Thinking it was our black sex link named sarah. She is a real princess. She is always in and around the coop by herself away from the rest of the flock. Very friendly and always at my feet when I am working in the coop area. All our birds are very precious to us, even our meat birds. Local predators are always going to be a threat. It will always be a battle contending with them. Its a part of of nature that we have to deal with and accept unwillingly.
