Alfalfa in the run?

We have had a ridiculously wet spring/summer. Rain daily, and not just rain, gully washers! The run is just a mess. I brought home a bale of compressed Alfalfa/Orchard Grass. I was thinking of just spreading it in the run to see if it helps. I figure if they peck at it and eat the seeds and such that are in it it would be ok. Or am I creating a problem?

I would first try to improve the run drainage issues, and the pile on the wood chips and shavings, and then add some hay. I think just hay as a base will develop into a moldy mess, so use it along with other materials.
More opinions needed here! I know what wet hay is like, and have never had to deal with this in a chicken run. It's not wonderful is a wet spot in a livestock paddock though.
