How can I easily clean the algae off off my plastic waterer? I hesitate to use cleaners that might not be safe for my chickens, but the algae is very hard to scrub off.

Why not use some bleach? I don't know if I would use it on galvanized metal but plastic is fine. Bleach will eat the algae away. Just rinse good when done cleaning. Any left over residue wont hurt your birds. You can even go a step further and sit the waterer in the sun. The sun will break down chlorine into salt which will be a miniscule amount anyways.

Bleach would be better than anything abrasive(which could scratch plastic making subsequent growth even harder to clean off).
Rotating 2 waterers daily, cleaning and drying 1, would probably solve the problem....
...or keeping waterer out of the sun.
