Hi! I started my flock May 2025 in suburban Missouri. I’m a Georgia girl currently trapped in the freezing weather. Send thoughts and prayers.
I researched to the point of exhaustion. I love it!
My ladies are spoiled, gorgeous and hilarious. For example, if my Buff Orpington Buffy pecks through my Crocs one more time we’re going to fight.
My flock is currently 9 strong. I want more, because of course, chicken math.
I have the regal Australorp Nubia (the head hen I don’t know what she did but I’ve NEVER seen anybody challenge her. Seriously she just floats around the yard.); the previously mentioned Buffy (She finally recovered from the tail pulling incident of July 2025 that we shall not discuss in detail out of consideration for her (and I for that matter) and lets us hug her again); Simone the stunning escape artist and recovering spazz of a Salmon Faverolle; Sweet Baby the Light Brahma (Her name could easily have been Big Baby or Greedy Heifer. She’s serious about food to the point of biting my fingers. She’ll even jump that big ole body at least 5 inches off the ground to do it.); the Lavender Orpington twins Wanda (She’s named after a former patient at her daughter’s request) and Gwanda (blame my now 10 y.o.
) They are beyond sweet. One is a complete cuddle bug.; and then there are the 3 EEs Viola, Peaches and Fanny Lou. Viola is the track star runner and mystery. Is she laying? Who knows? I can’t catch her to check her vent and I don’t want to stress her too much. If she is laying it’s not any of the desired colors and I’m disappointed. She hatched in early May 2025. Fanny Lou and Peaches are the youngest hatched in mid June 2025. Fanny Lou is laying. She went from being skittish to a complete cuddle bug.
They have been so healing for me. I’m recovering from a severe and prolonged exacerbation of a chronic condition. I helped build the coop and run. I learned to use power tools. I built a gorgeous nesting box and then painted it poorly. I became very fluent in hardware cloth. Constant improvements to the coop give me something to do other than just ruminating about my health. They bring me so much joy every day.
Anyway, here are some of my favorite photos of our journey so far. The quality has gotten better over time. I used my iPhone Pro 15 Plus. The most recent photos were taken in the Portrait mode. I’m very pleased with how they turned out. Ignore me, focus on them.
Sweet Baby before she hurt my back.

Finally an individual photo of Gwanda? I don’t know. I swear this is Wanda but the 10 y.o. says this is Gwanda. One has a darker neck than the other. What do I know?
If you made it this far thanks for meeting my ladies.
