so, hatching early seems to be a trend

I just had a little duckling hatch, 3 more to go, I think the other may have died.

anyways, he's alittle early, although today is hatch day, he started yesterday.

will he sleep through the night, like a chick??

i put a wet cloth over him, and packed it down in hopes that it'll keep him still, and moist.

but do ducklings sleep theough the night, like chicks do??

I'm sorry but you're keeping him "moist"? & you're doing that why? I thought like chicks they need to dry off & be kept warm & I've 7 chicks next to me in a brooder as I type, it's now 1:44 am & none of them are sleeping....? I don't think I've ever had a click that sleeps through the night??? I wouldn't want any of them to be moist or "damp" because you don't want them to get chilled because it'll kill them. They should be at 90 degrees, dry & kept out of drafts. Their water should be so they *can't swim* because you don't want them chilled....

Ducks and chicks are very different. I know that even incubating them is very different and requires misting and so forth. I have never incubated but I watch the threads and as far as I can see duckies need to be kept moist.

A search of "incubating ducks" or "incubating duck eggs" may be in order to get more info. Wish I could help with saying yes or no but I can only go by what I have read.

good luck with the little one.

Your suppose to keep the duckling dry, not moist.

A moist environment is not healthy for a duckling.
And no, They dont sleep all night long (I've never had a chick sleep all night either)

I thought you hatched ducklings before

The duckling needs to be dry, you'd only need to keep moist if it was still in the hatching stage. Congrats on the new duckling, but make sure it stays dry and warm.

Thank goodness experience came in...I knew about keeping them moist but was not sure when except when the eggs were incubating.

Thank you for helping because I did not know.

it seems as though I had forgotten to mention he still had yolk outside his body when he hatched, my bad. it was late.

THAT is why I kept him moist, he's fine, his three other siblings have made holes in their shells now, turns out, the baby I thought might have died before hatch, had almost zipped, then died
