My first coop just came with farm block locks and my expansion went to wire and wrong hardware was purchased and we needed a place for chickens to spend the night so also got a farm block lock, albeit a thick heavy over head block.

Since today was the day babies were moving into downstairs apartment (with walls added to back end so they can be snug and cozy though I am still going to worry even though low is likely a warm 60 and they are almost 3 weeks old with most of their feathers- I may need to post in raising chicks too.)

It was time to upgrade security.

Farm block lock is a block of wood screwed into frame that can be twisted sideways blocking the door from opening.

It never failed me but others have said raccoons can overcome this type of block fairly easy. This one is pretty sturdy and would be awkward for raccoon to reach but I feel better knowing there is a secondary lock system.
